If you haven’t heard of #GIRLBOSS by now, you’re either new to the blogging world or have been living under a rock. #GIRLBOSS, written by founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, Sophia Amoruso, is seen as a bible to those who are looking to make it big in the world of business, all while doing it their way and being a #GIRLBOSS. Sophia offers so many life lessons throughout the book, all while being blunt, honest, and having a sense of humor.

Lesson 1: Life is About Working Hard (Always)

This lessons comes in the first paragraph of the first chapter (this is how you know the book is going to be good). Sophia starts the book by saying two things; wanting an awesome life is the first step in becoming a #GIRLBOSS, and that becoming a #GIRLBOSS takes a lot of hard work. As a #GIRLBOSS, you can’t be afraid of getting your hands dirty and putting the time in. It takes a lot of work to get to where you want to be, and then once you’re there, it’s even harder to stay.

“A#GIRLBOSS is someone who’s in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it. As a #GIRLBOSS you take control and accept responsibility.”

Lesson 2: Do What You Have to Do and Take the Shitty Job

No job is beneath you. Sophia worked at Subway, Borders, a restaurant (for a day), a campus safety host at a college in San Francisco, a luxury shoe store, and more, all before starting Nasty Gal. She managed to find something fun about every position, and wasn’t afraid to leave and find another shitty job. She knew what she needed to do to make money, and she did it. While no one probably likes the idea of working at Subway, it’s important to remember that it’s not forever (hopefully). Everyone does their time working at a minimum wage job (or six) before moving on to a “career” job.

Lesson 3: It’s Not About the Money

Sophia states that she never started Nasty Gal with the intent of building a multi million dollar company or becoming rich. She simply believed in what she was doing and paid attention to every little decision that was made about her company. If you don’t stand behind what you believe in, your blog or business will never succeed. What’s your motive, your reason for doing what you’re doing? If it’s to make money, shut your laptop, go hike a mountain, and really reflect on your life’s decisions. People will see right through you if all you want to do is make money, so find something you’re passionate about, and start from there.

“I believed in what I was doing, and fortunately other people believed in it as well. I cared as much about the process as I did about the results.”

Lesson 4: The Power of Magical Thinking

Sophia doesn’t believe in luck; she believes in magical thinking. When I first started reading this chapter, I was not convinced at all. As I continued reading, however, what Sophia was saying began to make sense. Chaos magic is the idea that our beliefs are tools we use to make things happen – or not. As #GIRLBOSS’s, it’s up to us to set intentions to fulfill our dreams and then go and do it.

Sophia also discusses leaving room for the universe to do what it will. The path to success is not a straight one. If you become fixated on one thing, you become blind to other possible opportunities. Try out different ways of doing something, work on a few projects at once, and remain open to new ideas. Know when something isn’t working and when it’s time to move on.

“If something’s not working out, but you keep hammering at it in the exact same way, go after something else for a while. That’s not giving up, that’s just letting the universe have its way.”

Lesson 5: On Being an Introvert

As a self proclaimed introvert, this one really hit home. While extroverts are typically the ones who are noticed and receive more praise, being an introvert has many advantages. Introverts are able to pay attention to the smaller details, while extroverts tend to look at the bigger picture. Introverts make fewer risky financial decisions, are creative, and persistent. So maybe we don’t LOVE being in social situations, but we definitely have what it takes to be #GIRLBOSS and run a business.

So, not only does #GIRLBOSS make a great prop in photos (simply speaking the truth here), it’s inciteful and can teach a girl a lot about being true to herself to get ahead. Pick up a copy for yourself and start drinking the kool-aid like the rest of us bloggers 😉

Great lessons learned! I read this book a while ago and it really hit home for me! I could relate to so much of what Sophia wrote about! And woohoo for introverts!

I can’t tell you how long I’ve been wanting to read this book. It’s gotten such great reviews, but I love how you laid yours out here, and it makes me want to read it more. I watched the show on Netflix, and I loved the quirkiness, but I can’t wait to read the book and get all the inspiration.

These are all so true! I think a lot of people forget that it’s okay to take a not so great job if needed.

I just started the show on Netflix and can’t wait to read the book!

Yesss! I could not agree more with all of these points, especially #1! Some people think that you will be successful without working hard, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to be successful 🙂

YASSS! Such great lessons here! It’s true! No job is beneath us. Sometimes, before we “make it”, we just have to do what is necessary!

You have to work some pretty crappy positions/jobs to get where you want to be! That’s just life, but very important to remember you don’t get to start at the top!

These are all awesome lessons and I especially love #3. If you’re in it purely for monetary reasons, I think your passion may get lost. Great post!

I read #GirlBoss a couple years ago so I didn’t remember all of the valuable tips you gleaned.

There’s some great takeaways in this book! I had the opportunity to hear Sophia speak at an event a few years ago before #Girlboss came out and it was very inspiring!

That’s awesome! I would love to hear her speak.

This is still on my reading list! I’ll hopefully get to it soon. I’ve heard so many great things about it. 🙂

I have had this on my list to read for a while now and I really think I need to! The section about being an introvert hits home with me too.

I’ve been hesitant lately to read Girlboss or watch the Netflix series because I’ve heard some not so great things about the quality of the series. But I’ve been listening to her podcast lately, and I’m into it! It’s really inspiring to hear about other women taking charge in their lives and doing what they want. You’re right, it’s not about making money, it’s about having the lifestyle you want!

I loved reading that book! It came out when I still lived in Germany and I remember a girl on a train asking me where I got it because it hadn’t released in German yet!
