I know what you’re thinking, “hot chocolate in August?” But here me out! Before you know it, Autumn will be here, we’ll be pulling out our oversized sweaters, slipping on a pair of boots, and grabbing for the first hot drink we can find. I’m not one to wish away summer, but the nights are growing colder and I can practically hear the leaves crunching under my feet.
When I received three brand new matcha flavors from Bluebird Tea Co. I honestly wasn’t too sure what recipe I could make with them. I was going to make a milkshake with the ice cream matcha, but I thought that would be to obvious. There was the Chili Kale matcha, but that one really stumped me. Then I started to think up a salted caramel banana bread using the salted caramel matcha. Last weekend though, when rummaging through Luke’s cupboards, I found a salted caramel hot chocolate mix. That’s when it hit me. I had to make a hot chocolate with the matcha!
This recipe is a bit of a two parter, and may seem a bit involved for just a hot chocolate, but I promise you it’s worth it. The first step is to make the caramel sauce, using 5 simple ingredients you probably already have at home. Be patient with the caramel sauce; it takes time to turn that amber color we’re so used to seeing.
Then, taking that caramel sauce and your matcha, you make the hot chocolate! At this point it’s really just combining your ingredients in a sauce pot and letting them heat up. I made both of my parents try the caramel and the hot chocolate because they both taste so good! I will most definitely be making this more as the weather gets colder and cozier.

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp water
- 1/4 cup salted butter diced into 1 Tbsp pieces
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 tsp fine sea salt
- 2 cups milk preferably whole
- 1 tsp Salted Carmel Matcha
- 1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips
- 1/3 cup caramel sauce
- Sweetened whipped cream
To Make the Caramel Sauce
In a 2 - 3 quart saucepan, heat sugar and water over medium-high heat whisking constantly to dissolve sugar.
Once mixture reaches a boil, stop whisking and allow mixture to boil until it reaches a dark amber color, carefully swirling pan occasionally until it reaches a deep reddish orange color.
Once mixture reaches a dark amber color, immediately add butter and whisk until butter has melted then immediately remove from heat.
Carefully pour in cream and immediately whisk to combine (it will bubble vigorously). Whisk until mixture is smooth.
Stir in sea salt.
To Make the Hot Chocolate
Whisk matcha and milk together until thoroughly combined.
Heat milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Once milk is warm, stir in chocolate chips and caramel, and cook whisking constantly until chocolate has melted.
Allow to cool slightly and serve warm topped with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, caramel sauce, or whatever else you may like!
